Advice from Avery

Avery’s main emphasis is on regional, drivable, vacation-rental markets, because they are recession-proof, an especially important factor in the current pandemic. She believes that an easy way to think of areas that may be the best places for investment are locations you may have visited as a child and rented a house, rather than stayed in a hotel. Likewise, Avery suggests that metro area markets are not the best places to look because of regulations and competition of nearby hotel markets.

“True vacation rental markets—areas where people have been renting vacation rentals for decades, well before the dawn of Airbnb and Vrbo—are very safe investments with little short-term rental regulations.”
